Kitchen Tip Tuesday

Thought this looked fun!

My kitchen tip is about Buttermilk.

I never seem to have buttermilk (because I've never bought it, duh). So, I make it myself. All I do is mix 1Tablespoon of lemon juice for every cup of milk. I add the juice to a measuring cup, measure out how ever much milk in the same cup. Stir. Then let it sit for 5 minutes. The acid in the juice sours the milk (buttermilk is basically sour milk).

So, there you go. My tip for Tuesday.

I do that, too, and it works really well!

This is what I do too! I hate buying buttermilk because they don't sell small enough containers for the recipes I use and I always end up throwing some away. There really is no taste difference using sour milk as opposed to buttermilk!

Thank you for sharing that tip. I don't buy buttermilk but I find many recipes that call for buttermilk. I'll have to give this a try.

Bethanie, thanks so much for participating! :)

I have never bought buttermilk, either! Does this disqualify me from having a cooking website? ;) I guess since my mom never bought any, and used the lemon juice substitute, I just always did that. :) It's handier than buying additional ingredients, though! :)

A little vinegar works the same way too!

I do that as well! Isn't it handy?

I'd forgotten this tip, thanks for reminding me! A while ago we'd visited an Amish Country Store and they had powdered buttermilk. I bought a bag and it lasted me forever...fresh tasting too. The lemon juice is something I'd be more likely to have on hand though, now that my other has run out!

I just love the cannister holding the utensils in that logo...so pretty, I want one!

Hi Bethanie! Thank you for the great tip! I love buttermilk, but making my own would be fun and frugal!

Is it really ready after 5 minutes?

Mary, I'll have to look for that the next time we visit the Amish.
Anna: if it makes you feel better you can wait 10 minutes or whatever, but yes it really only takes 5.
